Working as onmyōji (a specialist in magic) for the Heian government, Abe no Seimei was a man of legend. Originally brought into his role for his skills in divination and astrology, his reputation soon grew far beyond this.

It was said that his mother was Kitsune, making him more than human and possibly supernatural. Stories of his childhood describe his ability to control Oni but thankfully, he had his gracious mother for guidance and she made sure he did not use these demons for any evil means.

One of our favorite tales of Abe no Seimei was a report about his rival trying to beat him in a battle of divination. They were both presented with a box containing 15 oranges - oranges the rival was already aware of - when Abe no Seimei was asked what was in the box, he said 15 rats. When his rival opened the box, expecting to see oranges, Abe no Seimei had turned them into rats, thus not only beating his opponent but frightening the living daylights out of him.
