One of Guatemala’s most famous figures, El Sombrerón is an intriguing fellow indeed. Not particularly tall but filled with charm and seduction, he is often seen riding a pack of mules through towns in Guatemala, waiting for a young woman to fall for his advances. He dresses entirely in black with a thick black belt and broad-brimmed black hat. At his back is a silver guitar and if any woman looks his way, eyes filled with curiosity (or lust for that matter), he’ll stop outside her window, and begin to serenade her.

This all sounds incredibly charming and even romantic, if you’re that way inclined. However, there is a dark core at the center of El Sombrerón’s tale. Any young woman who falls for his musical grand gesture is doomed to a life of insomnia and lack of appetite. Victims are often girls with big eyes and dark hair (think of a Tim Burton waifish muse) and once he has one under his spell, it’s incredibly difficult to pull her out of it. Somehow, he manages to transform all her meals to dirt and she is unable to eat.

The only case study we have found so far of a girl being roused from El Sombrerón’s spell is one girl whose parents cut off all of her hair and took her to their local priest, who blessed her shorn locks with holy water. This seems like a drastic action to us but if this case worked, we think short pixie cuts are actually looking very good this year…
