While black dogs are present in the histories of many cultures, Black Shuck is one of the most well renowned. An omen of death, Old Shuck, is an ominous figure found roaming churchyards and cemeteries in the night. It is described as a giant dog with shaggy black fur and piercing red eyes. While some may have debated its size, its black fur and red eyes are seldom disputed.
Most frequently found in tales from Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, its name can be heard across England. It’s commonly considered an omen of death. To see Black Shuck is a sign of death to come. While it might not always be your own head on the chopping block, it's certainly a sign of a loss coming into your life.
Some folklorists consider Black Shuck to be a less foreboding figure, suggesting that he’s a formidable companion if you can get him onside. However, one specific incident we heard of from the 16th Century describes Black Shuck as crashing into a church mid-worship and killing several, while also leaving flaming scorch marks where he destroyed the church doors.
Whether dark messenger of death or frightening friend, Black Shuck is as old as our Grimoire and we cannot possibly know everything he is capable of. Further study (with a large dose of caution) is advised.
