Described as more like an island than a sea creature, the Hafgufa is a patient beast that will wait and wait for the perfect meal. First reported in the 13th century, it was said that the Hafgufa would churn up its own vomit to attract fish into its open mouth, before snapping its jaws shut to devour anything in its path.
Many boats that sailed over the open-mouthed Hafgufa said its teeth simply looked like rocks, and they were stunned when it moved to attempt to eat them. Several of these boats escaped Hafgufa attacks, but many were not so lucky.
In recent years, skeptics have claimed that these tales are simply descriptions of normal whales using trap feeding techniques. However, we would argue that more sightings of this feeding style and the reported "Hafgufa perfume" smell of rotten cabbage, mentioned in 13th-century writings, suggest that now that the Rift is open, the Hafgufa is back. And it is very, very hungry.
