Known as the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, Marie Laveau was a key figure in her community during the 1800s. Originally a hairdresser, she became a healer, midwife, and spiritual leader as her client list grew.
During her time in her beauty parlor, she began her career by giving prominent ladies advice, performing Voodoo rituals, and providing potions and remedies. She also used her skills as a clairvoyant to offer her clients insight and assistance with their problems. As her respect and prominence grew, she became the Voodoo leader of New Orleans, offering her services from her home as well as other key locations in the community.
Rumors abound about Laveau’s supernatural abilities. Some claimed she had a pet snake named Zombi, while others said she communed with Catholic saints as well as African and Native American spirits. It was also rumored that she visited prisoners on death row, slipping them poisons before they faced the gallows.
Laveau’s legacy lives on, and her tomb remains a place of reverence. Many believe the Voodoo Queen still grants wishes. Some visitors chip pieces off the stone structure, make a wish, and leave an X mark on the wall. They then return to draw a circle around the X if the wish comes true. In both life and death, Marie Laveau is a powerful ally, offering support, security, and the occasional occult ritual.
