Much like her Celtic counterpart, the Banshee, the Klagmuhme makes her presence known with sorrowful sounds. With a name that literally means “wailing aunt,” she is infamous for her wailing, shrieking, and heralding death.
The Klagmuhme appears in several forms. One is the traditional mourning guise of an old woman in a black dress. Another is as an animal. The most frightening, however, is that of an old woman wearing a three cornered hat and burial robes, her face covered in cobwebs and dust.
To see and especially to hear the Klagmuhme is an omen of death. Her most frequent appearances are outside the home of someone gravely ill. If she appears and begins her lament, the other inhabitants must throw the sick person’s clothes outside. If the Klagmuhme leaves the items untouched, the sick will recover. But if she takes them away, they are doomed to die. Other accounts describe her floating over homes during storms, raising her hand to point out those about to face disaster. By morning, someone in that house will be dead.
While the Klagmuhme does not directly kill, she is an inescapable omen of death. If you hear her, there is nothing we can do to save you, so you had better hope she decides you are worthy of a second chance.
