Eighteen-year-old Hans the Werewolf is one of the central figures in the werewolf trials of Europe. This unfortunate young man was bitten by a mysterious man in black at the age of sixteen, after which he began to transform regularly into a wolf.
After being arrested by local authorities in Livonia (modern-day Estonia and Latvia), Hans confessed to hunting as a wolf. He admitted to killing and devouring wild animals, though it is unclear if he ever harmed any humans. When questioned, Hans insisted that he fully transformed into a wolf each time, rather than merely possessing a wild animal. This claim was supported by his observation that injuries he sustained in his wolf form, such as a bite to the leg, would appear on his human body.
A judge concluded that Hans had not been bitten by an ordinary man in black, but by the devil himself. Hans was subsequently tried not only as a werewolf but also as a witch—two charges for the price of one in the eyes of the Livonian authorities.
Unable to control himself while in wolf form, Hans is best approached when he is in human form—unless you’re prepared to risk transforming into a wolf yourself.
