From afar, Sihuanaba looks like a beautiful woman. She’ll often be facing away from you or her long hair is obscuring her face. She may even resemble your partner or crush. However, if you dare to follow her or get too close, you’ll quickly see what she’s been trying to hide from you.

While it appears that Sihuanaba has the body of a beautiful woman, once you’re up close, you’re confronted by the face of a horse. This isn’t us being cruel or nasty. She has an actual horse’s head attached to her neck. This shapeshifting figure targets both men and small children and to look upon her equine face it to be driven mad. When it comes to children, she often mimics their mothers and leads them into the woods where they will also eventually go mad. Some survivors have claimed that she didn’t have a horse’s head when they saw her, but simply an exposed human skull but we do not know how intact their sanity was after these encounters so cannot say for sure.

She is often found near bodies of water - such as lakes and rivers - and is sometimes spotted washing clothes when people first notice her. From here, she likes to tempt wanderers astray before driving them insane.

There are ways to break free of her madness though. She can be deterred by either presenting her with the sign of the cross or by biting a machete. As we generally find machetes harder to come by (and harder to explain when stopped by the authorities), we recommend carrying a small silver cross at all times, as this will come in useful when confronted by many different supernatural entities, not just Sihuanaba.
