Powerful sorcerers, or kalku, from Chile and Argentina are believed to have the ability to transform themselves into Chonchon. These creatures come about when the sorcerer detaches their head from their body and from there the head grows in size - particularly the ears, which take on a wing-like quality - and flies away.
It’s worth noting that these sorcerers cannot just detach their head at any time or whenever they feel like but rather, this is done as part of a ritual, which involves a special anointing tincture which is placed on the throat before beheading can take place. Please do not attempt to remove your own head for this purpose - this can only be achieved by these specialist sorcerers.
The Chonchon is then free to fly away and perform all manner of mischief. They are particularly fond of drinking blood - targeting those who are asleep or ill. Basically anyone who cannot fight back or defend themselves.
Our field agents have heard of some peculiar ways of fighting off or defeating a Chonchon. One involves leaving a waistcoat out for it or, if you’re very lucky and find the headless torso of the sorcerer, rolling them onto their stomach stops the Chonchon from being able to return. However, it should be noted that all of these methods may be useless in most cases as Chonchon can only be seen by fellow sorcerers. For the rest of us, all we can do is listen to their haunting cries, an eerie prelude to the loss of someone dear.
