Māui is a name known across the Pacific, whispered in tales of great feats and greater risks. He snared the sun, pulled islands from the sea, and stole fire from the gods. A demigod, yes, but not a safe one. His legends often end with triumph, but just as often with death, humiliation, or a new rule carved into reality. He is less a hero than a force: clever, fearless, and fatally curious.
One of the oldest tales speaks of Māui's attempt to conquer death. He transformed into a worm to crawl inside Hine-nui-te-pō, the goddess of the underworld, intending to exit through her mouth (or, depending on the retelling, the far less glamorous end), and thus reverse the fate of all mortals. But the birds watching him laughed. Hine awoke. The goddess crushed him with her obsidian thighs and death remained unconquered.
Field reports suggest Māui doesn’t slip in quietly. He arrives laughing, soaked in saltwater, already mid-scheme.
