Notorious necromancer Roger Bolingbroke made a grave error in judgment when he wrote his final horoscope: he predicted the death of King Henry VI.
Bolingbroke was a skilled astrologer, sorcerer, and an exceptionally well-read scholar. Fluent in Latin, he had access to powerful ancient texts. However, his reputation as a necromancer brought him infamy and ultimately his downfall.
His demise began when Eleanor Cobham, the wife of the Duke of Gloucester (conveniently the heir to the throne), approached him to create a horoscope for the king. While modern horoscopes offer vague advice or warnings about bad days, in the 15th century they were considered powerful tools for predicting the future. This particular horoscope also involved necromancy—speaking with the dead to uncover what lay ahead. Bolingbroke’s prediction of impending death for King Henry entangled him in a treasonous murder plot.
Roger Bolingbroke and a witch, Marjorie Jourdemayne (who claimed she had made potions for Eleanor Cobham), were executed for crimes against the crown. But was this truly a plot to kill the king, or simply the actions of a ruler unwilling to hear the predictions of a sorcerer?
Either way, Roger Bolingbroke remains a skilled magician and necromancer. As long as you’re willing to heed his warnings and you’re not of royal blood, he could prove to be a powerful ally.
