Historical records throughout Europe describe medical professionals brought in specifically during times of plague. These Plague Doctors were specialists in the Black Death in all its variations, although some did not survive the disease they were tasked with eradicating.

One notable report of a Plague Doctor in Edinburgh is that of George Rae, who was hired after the previous doctor died only a short time into his contract. Rae served the city long enough to survive the outbreak, though his steep wages were not actually paid until nearly two decades after his work was completed. This highlights the city council’s skepticism that he would live long enough for them to have to pay him. Being a Plague Doctor was clearly considered a temporary position, and the doctors themselves were seen as entirely disposable.

The typical Plague Doctor attire we recognize today emerged in the 17th century, though the concept of wearing a mask while treating patients dates back as far as the 1300s. The 17th century outfit included a bird-beaked mask stuffed with herbs and pleasant-smelling materials to combat the miasma in the air. The ensemble also featured an ankle-length hooded coat, gloves, and boots to cover as much of the body as possible.

Known for their hypochondria and reluctance to get close to others, Plague Doctors are not the easiest to communicate with—so expect a challenge if you try.
