Pincoya is a beautiful sight to behold. This water spirit with long blonde hair and a beautiful, beaming smile is a sign of good fortune and a plentiful haul for fishermen. As long as she’s facing towards the sea, that is. For if she rises from her ocean home and steps on land and places her docus on the mountains, well, things aren’t looking good.
This water spirit, hailing from Chiloé Island on the Pacific ocean (just off the coast of Chile), performs a sensuous dance to encourage fish towards the island shores. Again, as long as she dances in the right direction! However, this isn’t her only task.
As daughter of the king of the sea, she also has other important responsibilities. One of which is to join her sister (La Sirena Chilota) and brother (Pincoy) and usher the souls of drowned sailors onto the ghost ship, Caleuche. Once the three siblings have led the lost souls back onto their ship, the sailors can then continue to live out their afterlives as if they’d never died. Raising the sails, scrubbing the decks and forever seeking out a shore they’ll never reach. A sad job but one that Pincoya takes on with diligence and a sense of duty. Anyway, come morning, she’ll be dancing once more, shaking those hips and shrugging off that impending sense of sorrow that comes with seeking out lost souls.
