Working away in the mines deep within the Andes mountains is the Muki. This goblin is a diligent worker and is seen dressed in appropriate mining attire, complete with overalls, headlamps and thick boots. However, they’re a strange shape as their head is attached to their shoulders without any need for a neck. Their eyes have a metallic glint about them and they are able to see metal veins within the mines. They are occasionally described as elf-like but most of the reports we’ve seen have been closer to dwarves. Much like the Knockers of Wales, these are hard-working but also occasionally mischievous creatures.
Incredibly hairy creatures, the Muki has a thick white beard and wiry blonde hair. They speak with incredibly deep voices and almost never set a foot outside of the mines they live in. However, when they do leave the mine, it’s often to snatch up unsupervised children. They tend to target unbaptised ones so we recommend keeping all children away from mines, not only because mines aren’t places for children but also to keep them safe from the Muki.
While this sounds terrible (and we appreciate that stealing children is ghastly), the Muki can be helpful to miners working in the area. If you’re willing to trade some of your supplies with them (be that a small treat from your lunch or something to drink), they can do all manner of helpful things. From whistling to warn of impending danger, to softening a particularly difficult to crack metal vein, or even just offering some companionship as you work. However, if you promise them a reward and do not follow through, they are known to kill the untrustworthy.
So as long as you’re not a lying miner or an unbaptised minor, the Muki is a useful ally to have on your side.
