Herbalist, prophet, witch, Mother Shipton has been called a lot of things, and with good reason. Her prophecies, according to our records, have proven to be mostly accurate. Born in a cave in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, she was called Ursula Sonthiel and even her birth was a strange affair. Her mother, Agatha, would not name Ursula’s father and many locals declared her a witch and said that the father was the devil himself.

Mother Shipton, however, grew into a well-respected prophetess and seer, shaking off the mysteries of her birth. Physical descriptions of Mother Shipton have not been kind to her. Many said she had a crooked nose, bent legs and a hunched back. However, we think these rely more on stereotypes of witches at the time.

Shipton’s prophecies vary from small personal predictions she gave to locals, local disasters such as the flooding of the river Ouse, and much more historically significant ones, such as the Great Fire of London in 1666. Her skills were truly something to behold and we predict that you’re going to want this seer on your side.
