While many spirits are known for wails, screams, and whispers, Madam Koi Koi is named after the sound of her high heels click-clacking down school corridors. The name Koi Koi captures the noise as it warns people of her presence.
Haunting boarding schools across Nigeria (but also making appearances in Ghana and South Africa), she is the spirit of a cruel teacher who walks the corridors at night, searching for students to torment. Early reports state that while she was alive, she terrorized her students and was eventually fired for slapping a girl. After leaving the school, she was killed in a freak accident and swore to get revenge on the school and students for getting her fired. Some stories debate the accidental nature of her death, but as we have no evidence of this, we cannot say for certain.
Madam Koi Koi’s favorite ways of making her presence known include slamming classroom doors, humming or singing, and, of course, slapping people. She is most recognized for her shoes, not just because of the sound they make but for their bright red color. So even if you don’t hear her, that flash of red down the corridor might be just the warning you need to get out of there.
