Commonly known as La Voisin, Catherine Montvoisin was a professional sorcerer, fortune teller and a key figure in the Affair of the Poisons in 17th Century France. She was not only famous but infamous for her divination and potions and reportedly even held Satanic black masses for clients.

La Voisin turned to professional divination and sorcery after her husband went bankrupt. She became the main earner for the family and her client list grew quickly. She was soon mixing with the aristocracy and providing all manner of dark and magical support to those who were willing to pay well. Her services included obtaining magical objects and artifacts, brewing love potions and aphrodisiacs and, as previously mentioned, performing black masses. This leap between providing love potions and a direct line of communication with devils seems drastic but it paid her well and there was no sign of La Voisin stopping any time soon.

That is until the 1670s, when King Louis XIV’s mistress, Madame de Montespan, came to La Voisin seeking help with wooing the king (whose favor was beginning to wane). La Voisin reportedly held a black mass for her and provided love potions. However, when this didn’t work Montespan turned to La Voisin for poison for the King and this set in motion a series of events that would see the Affair of the Poisons come to light. And, ultimately, it would lead to La Voisin’s capture for poisoning and witchcraft.

La Voisin is a skilled sorceress if you’re willing to pay her hefty fee but if she offers you a drink, we’d recommend watching her take a sip first.
