British occultist Aleister Crowley is likely one of the most well known figures in occult circles in the 20th Century. Although he died in poverty and disgrace, his teachings and beliefs grew after his death, suggesting that he’d achieved his goals of extending his reach beyond the veil of life.

A novelist, poet, painter and mountaineer, Crowley practised what he called “magick” and formed his own religion Thelema. The core belief at the heart of Thelema was "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law", which sounds very idealistic but isn’t always practical in modern society. It also didn’t help that he was sympathetic towards Germany during World War I. As a result, much of Crowley’s teaching was overlooked during his lifetime but that didn’t stop him trying.

Crowley believed that, during a visit to Egypt, he was contacted by a messenger of Horus and even that his wife, Rose, went into a trance and Horus spoke through her. During these incidents, Crowley came to believe that he was a prophet of the Egyptian god and that this would shape his rituals and magickal practice for years to come.

It’s advisable to steer clear of this Kaiser-loving Renaissance man, his bluster alone might knock you over.
