In the 5th Century, in what is now Northern Ireland, a dwarf chieftain died and was buried standing upright, as was the custom. While alive, he was an incredibly cruel man and his name was Abhartach. However, shortly after his burial, he reappeared in town, even more malevolent than before, returning with an intense thirst for the blood of his subjects.
Stories go that when Abhartach was eventually slain, the only way to ensure he stayed put was to bury him upside down in his grave, head pointing deep into the earth, and cover the site with thorns and large stones.
Abhartach’s grave remains, and the stones are now called Slaghtaverty Dolmen. Various local stories describe workers trying to clear the area and failing, and even some coming to harm in the process. Those seeking to release Abhartach need only remove the stone and dig up the once fearsome chieftain. But be warned, he will wake up incredibly thirsty and we hope you bring something for him to drink other than water.
